Dame Janet Baker in Conversation with Humphrey Burton at Aldeburgh Cinema

The world renowned mezzo-soprano talked to broadcaster and writer, Humphrey Burton about her distinguished career in music. She recalled some of her most memorable performances, including her 1975 Aldeburgh Festival performance of Berlioz’s cycle Nuits d’été which inspired Benjamin Britten to write Phaedra for her. The many sound and video clips included extracts from Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda, Handel’s Giulio Cesare and her final appearance on the opera stage in Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridyce at Glyndebourne. At the end, the audience was invited to ask questions and the afternoon ended with a signing of CDs and DVDs by Dame Janet in the cinema foyer.

The event was made possible with the generous support of local solicitors, Fairweather Stephenson & Co.

Gala Opera Evening in the Shepherd
Churchill Room, Harrow School

Saturday 15th March, 2008 at 7.30pm.

A group of four highly talented young singers from around the world entertained an appreciative and delighted audience with a selection of famous opera arias, duets and quartets. Three of them are currently members of the prestigious Jette Parker Young Artists Programme at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. They were: Ana James, soprano, from New Zealand, Liora Grodnikaite, mezzo-soprano from Lithuania and Ji-Min Park, tenor, from Korea. The fourth singer, the fine young Australian baritone, David Welton, who sings Figaro in our production of The Marriage of Figaro, took the opportunity to give the audience a foretaste of the many delights he had in store for us in that role.
